The word vegetable describes the edible portions of certain plants. There is no formal definition of what constitutes a vegetable, which is a cultural rather than scientific term; however, for culinary purposes, almost any soft edible portion of a plant is considered a vegetable unless it is highly flavored enough to be an herb or spice or sweet enough to be considered a culinary fruit. This means that some edible plant products, such as tomatoes, cucumbers and chiles that are considered to be fruits in botanical terms are still properly considered vegetables in culinary terms. See the edible plants category page for more details.
