"The dipsomaniac and the abstainer are not only both mistaken, but they both make the same mistake. They both regard wine as a drug and not as a drink."

A perennial is a plant that, in its natural habitat, survives for multiple growing seasons, reproducing in multiple years without killing the original plants. Some annuals, such as trees, form permanent above-ground growth that remains over the seasons; others may die back to the soil each winter, or remain evergreen.

In areas where winters are harsher than their native climate, many perennials that produce edible or useful features in their first year are grown "as annuals." For example, the tomato, a perennial native to tropical climates, is generally grown as an annual in temperate climates, where it is killed by frost over the winter and must be started again from seed.
